1980 FLT seat?
« on: Sunday, October 18, 2009. 08:35:31 PM. »
My co-worker just bought his first HD a couple weeks ago.  It's a very clean stripped down 1980 FLT in black.  He's wanting to replace the OEM seat with a nice solo seat.  I've looked at about every catalog and can't find one.  Does anyone here know where he can get one or have one made?  We've looked at V-Twin Mfg, Dennis Kirk, Jireh Cycles, JP Cycles, Bikers Choice, Chrome Specialties, Drag Spec, Custom Chrome, and searched numerous websites/eBay.

If not.  What could be changed to make another type of solo seat fit the '80 FLT?

Thanks for any help or ideas.

I made one of those police air ride solo seats off Ebay fit my '82 FLT without too much problem.  Since the battery is outside the frame I mounted the air tank under the seat.  Most comfortable seat I've ever ridden on, and way cheaper than a Mustang.

My '81 FLT has a Corbin solo, Corbin# 134.
It requires the frame mounted hook to attach the front of the seat. I think that setup was used starting in '83.
The earlier seats (80 to 82) have two prongs that go under the frame crossmember.

I've got a Mustang solo on my 81 FLH - I assume the frame in that section is about the same.

You're right there, Pappy.  My wife who's 5'8" and doesn't have a problem flat-footing my '87 FLT with the stock seat, has to use her tip-toes when she's on the shovel with the air solo.  I'm 6' 2" with a 34" inseam and I can flat-foot the bike, but just barely.
Recently I've cut about 3/4" off the stops and I've been running about 45 psi in the bag.  That's lowered the ride height just a bit and made me more comfortable at stop signs.
I've got a 2" over windshield on the shovel and with that seat it's the perfect height.  With the shock preload set at the lowest setting and the air seat it's like riding a cloud, though.

Thanks for all the information.  He found a guy named John at Bar Enterprises out of California to custom make him a solo seat.  Supposed to take about a month or so.
