Need help diagnosing noise
« on: Sunday, September 16, 2012. 07:57:09 PM. »
Just got back from OC bike week, and have a weird problem to solve. When the bike is cold everything is ok, but the hotter it gets, I get a clicking to a loud banking from what sounds like the front of the primary. I had changed the rear seal in the primary before I left, torqued everything to spec, and left 3/4 inch of slack adjustment on the primary chain.

Sounds like your compensator is failing.

I agree with the two posts above - could be the comp bolt has backed off a bit. Check your primary chain again for adjustment. What seems odd is that you only get the noise when the engine is warm - my comp nut came loose and I heard it right away. I even had the chain adjustment shoe bracket come loose one time which made a ton of noise inside the cover. Check the easy stuff first and keep us posted.

The belt and pulley swap went great. The bike cruises at 75 mph no problem. But apparently I have created the knocking noise, by doing the belt. I do think it's odd that you only hear it when the motor is hot, but it sure sounds like its coming from the primary, a 113 with V&H long shots sure is loud, maybe it's there, but can't hear it at idle. I'm going to get a mechanics stethoscope.

3/4 of an inch for the adjustment? Is that supposed to be 3/8?
Could the chain be hittimg the inner primary?
Just one more thing to check.

3/8 to 5/8 for a hot chain. 5/8 to 3/4 for a cold chain. Apparently the pulley and clutch grow a little with heat. That's right out of the Harley service manual.

You may be surprised where the noise is actually coming from. I had a loose front wheel hub cap on my Heritage. I would have sworn it was coming from the tranny! Had a buddy ride beside me to hear where it was really coming from. Noises move through the frame and the moving parts.
Since you were in the primary and changed and adjusted things, that's probably where you should start. When parts in the primary get hot, they expand and go bump.
There is always something you can do!
