Added the 2nd oil cooler to my 107
« on: Sunday, September 16, 2012. 07:24:33 AM. »
I coughed up $187 to Harleydirect for jagg 10 row low mount hooked it up in series with my Jagg 10 row vertical.  I don't have any saddle time yet.

My oil temp would peak at 235F on 100F days and IMO that is too friggin hot for the amount of cash I have in this motor.

Hoping the 2nd cooler will hold me closer to 200F,  we'll see...

I live/ride in south Texas where summer temps can be 100+ from July thru August.  I run two Jagg coolers, vertical and low mount unts, same hook up, on my 107; the frame mount was just installed this spring.  On the hottest days, running 75-80, oil temps rarely hit 220*.  I am thinking I will have to cover the frame mount cooler this fall and thru our "winter" months.

Should be interesting to see what the effect is on pressure and flow, especially at idle.

I ran 2 on my 07 ultra 96" didn't make a lot on difference. It quit running hot as soon as I removed the temp gauge.

Why not a fan such as one like this?

Several years ago there was a discussion about which was better using 2 coolers in series or parallel.  IIRC, I think parallel had the better result.  Might be worth researching...

I believe you should be correct. It is easier to remove a few degrees from a higher temp. fluid.
In other words, you will have more success removing X degrees of heat from 3 qts. oil buy doubling the volume of cooler, than trying to get those same 3 qts., XX cooler. :pop:

You got way more out of that dissociation then I did.. IMO series is better unless you are worried about flow..

I run the Jagg 10 row horizontal with the fan, and the vertical 10 row in series. The vertical gets fed first. Also have the Wards Parts werks cooling fan. My oil temp sits at 185-190 when cruising @ 70mph on a 75-80F day. I am finding the head temp to be higher than I like, with the vertical cooler installed as specified by Jagg, so I'm going to turn the cooler out into the wind, to allow the air to flow over the engine w/o the effect created by the "wing flap" on the cooler.
Btw, I also have the thermostat, and the fan has never come on yet, so my oil hasn't gotten to 210 F, apparently. Running Torco 50w, my oil pressure is 55psi cold idle, 40-42 hot, 15 hot idle.

With the vertical 10 row fed first, then the low mount horizontal, temps hang around 200*-210*; have seen 220* but that is after being in traffic for a while.  Pressure sits about 10-12psi at idle; 32-34psi at cruise with the upgraded pump.  Works good enough for me.

If 235F was the max. temp. the motor oil reached I would smile and twist the throttle.  I thought 210-220F was a desired minimum for most performance engine guru's.  There's current water cooled cars that run oil temps. in the low to mid 200's,  some higher.  My local weather has had 40 some days over 100F this year and my tank oil temp. measured by the HD analog dipstick (100* day) can reach 210-235F on shorter trips to/around town and 245-255F with sustained speeds over 70.  I started to put a cooler on the bike when new and a veteran of performance/racing at the HD dealership I was looking to purchase it from talked me out of it even after I commented that I didn't want to slow down/back off when it is hot out.  So after 77,000 miles and an engine that perceivable uses no oil between 5K changes and has required zero maintenance or repair including the original cam chain tensioners and inner cam bearings I think he was correct in stating a cooler wasn't necessary. I think proper oil and flow through the engine is more important than worrying about oil temp. and hanging a series of accessories on the bike for oil to navigate through.  Lowering my oil temps. 15-20F would be good during the hot months but I haven't been motivated to create a sludge maker out of an air cooled engine.  Just my 2 cents.  Rick

I didn't post this for debate & I sure am happy for those of you that like yr oil hot or choose to not measure good for you  :argue:

Me I like 200F and like I posted have enough experience with it running there to feel and hear the differences, it plain runs better there and my family jewels nutz like not being cooked when I get done with a ride.

Just an opinion not a debate.  No doubt air cooled engine is a different beast.  My point was 235F is not going to cause a lubrication failure and wouldn't personally be cause for a second cooler on my bike.  Millions of cars running around with 210F coolant temps and equivalent or slightly higher oil temps and not a lot of oil related failures.. manufacturers are looking for 210F plus oil temps.  Race engine builders like to see 200F or higher before you wing their stuff.  But YBallsMV.  HP='s heat so I can understand you wanting a cooler on your bike.  Rick

My car doesn't even have a water temp gauge, only an oil temp gauge. It has an factory oil cooler, and it runs 250 degrees, all the time and in all weather.

These bikes are air cooled, not oil cooled. On a bike, if the oil temp only got to 235 on a 100 deg day, I would think that would be outstanding. Keep it moving and air going over the fins and you need not worry. The police bikes have a fan, and it blows over the cylinder fins. The synthetic oils can take the heat.

:agree:  nothing to be concern with.  I am tickled when my 120 runs at 225 -235 in 102 deg. days

I am planning the same thing in reverse. My current cooler is the horizontal Jagg with fan. I feel I need one (In the wind) too.  :bike:
