Normal Operating Temp.
« on: Friday, September 21, 2012. 07:39:44 PM. »
Sold the 04 Ultra and bought a low mileage 2011 Ultra.  96", Stage 1, SE slip ons and stage one flash.  75 degrees today, stuck in stop and go traffic.  Punched the button on the dip stick thermometer and it said 263!!
:wtf: I said to subject thermometer "you gotta be $hittin me".  I don't know if it's accurate?  Does this sound like a normal reading?  It felt like it was radiating some heat and I have heard the newer engines run a little warm but this seems  a little hot.

Thoughts?

It's easy to check the accuracy of a thermometer.  Take a medium size container and fill it with water and ice cubes. let it sit and equalize for a while and you have 32f (sea level temps, they should decrease with an increase in altitude, you should be able to look up the exact numbers for your location ).  Boiling water is 212f ( don't let it touch the pan ).  Mineral oil is about 347f.

Not sure how long you were stuck in traffic but your oil will just keep getting hotter and hotter the longer you are stopped. I am running two 10 row coolers, if it's warm and I get stuck, I see those temps.
I haven't used a stage one Harley flash but from what I've read they are pretty lean. Maybe a tune would help fend off the temps a little(give you a little more time) but they will still skyrocket if stopped no matter how much fuel you throw at it.
Check your oil temp accuracy with a candy thermometer. Worked okay for me.

Harley flash is definitely on the lean side, but that temp isn't unrealistic. My old bike that was high compression 95" would get there in traffic. As far as operating temps go, I liked to see under 250 if at all possible. At that temp, your head temp is probably at or over 300.
