07 flhx 5th gear whine.
« on: Sunday, September 16, 2012. 03:44:03 PM. »
My ride has almost 50000 miles on it, and I seem to be hearing a whine when I am in 5th gear? I knew there were some issues concerning that when they first came out, but I never had any. Then I think they changed that gear in 08-09? Any suggestions on a cure? I looked at the baker DD7, but it cost way to much. Any idea what a whole new transmisson casstte costs?
Thanks.

IF you put in a quart of Redline ShockProof Heavy geear oil in the tranny the WHINE will be gone.

Last time I checked, that 5th gear whine was pretty much normal. Straight cut gear. The way I get around it is to shift into 6th. Then again, the 5th gear noise doesn't bother me.

Had the same noise on an 07 EGC. Installed the ids and found that to be money well spent as the noise was eliminated.

Originally I had no 5th whine in my 07 softail. Only the last two seasons have I had the noise, not overly loud, just there when slipped into fifth. We got the oddballs since most made this noise right out of the box. Unless it gets worse I'll leave it alone.

I thought with miles it would get better. Mine did it a little bit when new but after some miles it has almost disappeared. Either that or I am going deaf! Fortunately for me, I live in a fairly flat part of Texas and get to use 6th gear almost all the time.

I can hear the 5th gear in my '08 over my D&D exhaust, and I have the load baffle!   :dgust:

My 07 FLHX did the same. All other gears were Helical cut except fifth, it's a straight cut.  I think all 07s did the same.  Just get used to it. I put 40,000 on mine before the trade, it was all good. :smiled:

Normal (and annoying...) in the '07's... never buy a new model year anything, they ALWAYS have issues, and eng. updates folow the next year... this annoying problem was fixed in '08... I love my 5 speed... :chop:

Not that I can tell.....  my '08 sings in 5th gear, silent in all the others. My '09 however is quiet in 5th.

My experience was the opposite.  I used the SPH for 5 or 6K and in my opinion it's just too thick.  I am trying Mobile1 75-90 synthetic now.  With the M1 the tranny shifts soooooooo much better.  With the SPH it would clunk.  With the M1 it just gives a little click.

Another thing I noticed with the SPH was no fuzz on the drain plug.  I have to wonder if the SPH is so thick and sticky that it's holding the fuzz in suspension and continually runs it around the gearbox, rather than it settling and sticking to the magnet.

Anyway, not to debate fluids, but I won't ever use or recommend SPH to anyone.  I don't consider these gearboxes as severe use, heavy duty use or whatever else anyone wants to term it.  I haven't tried the SP lightweight version but that may be a better fluid for the bikes.

As far as 5th gear whine...absolutely no difference between the two fluids.

:agree:    I use Redline Shock Proof, and agree, it doesn't quieten the 5th gear whine.

I have used both AmsOil and Royal Purple 75W140 with great results.

The thiker oil quieted things down significantly and made the shifts much smoother.

Earlier you said Shockproof Heavy gets rid of the whine.  Now your saying they all whine and it's normal.

For crying out loud ....which is it?   :nix:

I "think" the way to interpret this is that the straight cut gears whine, by their nature.  The Redline can help (sometimes) to cut that down a bit.  It's not guarantee but I've personally seen Redline do some nice things for trannys.

I get tired of defending Redline. NO Pay involved from them.. Should be though..... I only do,,, so that OTHERS may try it and find it DOES quiet down a tranny...

Old Story, Keys on this board are used to typing it.

Friend bought a New SG or RG (?shark nose?). traded his Pristine 03 for it. That same day he called and asked IF I would go with him to get his trade-in back. IF they still had it... Really Mad...

He said that the tranny was SO Noisy, First and Fifth.... he Plain didn't want it.

When he call them about it just before he called me, they said,,,, Yep you guessed it"""""" THEY All Do It... :hyst:

I ask him to stop by first and try a quart of Redline SP Heavy.. Relunctantly he did... Say some of the same things said here........ Real Skeptic...

He took a quart home and installed it. Was out for a couple of hours and then called me to THANK me for saving face with his HD purchase and what he was about to do (tough x marine) to UNDO the Deal...NOW His bike was Quiet... He was Happy...

He also siad He could NOT believe the difference. (A good difference)

That is all I need to say.

EITHER try it or NOT.........
