removing complete engine -- UPDATE

I'd appreciate any tips or tricks about lifting the entire assembled engine out of the bike....everything is now disconnected and oil filter mount is off.....I'm ready to pull the 4 bolts to the tranny....SM says the engine weighs about 165#

I have floor jacks and a m/c frame jack but would like to know if there are any tricks on how to muscle it out of the frame with ease

This is how I did it. Suprisingly easy. Did this all on the garage floor. First have an engine stand handy on the floor next to you. I used the one from Jims. Everything disconnected except those 4 bolts. Next use a ratcheting tye down strap and loop it under the trans and over the frame. tighten it down until the motor just starts to lift up from the front motor mount bracket. With the bike leaned over on the kickstand, place a floor jack under the motor case. Jack the motor up just a tiny bit and remove the 4 bolts. Pry the motor foward enough to clear the dowels from the two of those 4 bolts, keep ahold of the motor from the top so it doesn't fall over and then lean it back upright. Grab ahold of it from each head by the exhaust ports. Lift it out and set it down on engine stand. Bolt it to the stand, then go get your buddy to help lift it onto work bench. Motor weighs 165? I weigh 165 on a good day and it didn't seem that bad. Oh, and to put it back in, everything in reverse. This was on an 03 RG.

I just blocked and straped the trans took out the four bolts and my son and I lifted it right out then picked up the S&S 111 and put it in took about 10 minutes total. I put pipe insulation on the down tubes to avoid scratching. It's best to have some help.

I did it by myself... I put the bike and tranny up on a low bike lift. ($99 at Staples) then removed the top end which is a bunch of the weight. Then a little lift and twist and it was out.  Wasnt pretty but when you are by yourself it works. The same going back in.

I do it the same way; always by myself.  The extra half hour it takes to pull the top end is worth the time for me.

Pretty much what they all said but i leave it together. I had my TC88 on the scale and it read 135lbs.
I thought I was wrong once but i was mistaken.

OK it was a piece of cake with the heads left on the engine and on the side stand

I did remove the front triangular motor mount bracket and the oil filter mount, master cylinder and brake line.....then when I was tilting it out, it got hung up on the frame backbone so I had to remove the upper engine mounting bracket that bolts to the heads...

gave it a bear hug around the jugs and out it came...
