Six speed tranny disassemble

(1/2) > >>

desertrat:
We're 100 miles from nowhere and tranny pooped out on buddy's bike. It's a 2008 bagger, six speed. The bearing on the right side, rear shaft came apart.  We took apart the right side, but the cover with the bearings in it won't come off. It looks like the shifter drum is attached somehow. What's the secret??? No.2, We then took off the primary completely. But the spacer on the shaft, between the sprocket and inner primary is tighter than all getout on the shaft. Is it supposed to be that tight?  Much thanks in advance.   Tom

That race is pressed on in front of the tranny sprocket,  it will have to be cut
off or pulled with a puller, it will require a installer tool also.

The trap door will require a puller also.

You guys are going to have to get it to a shop.

1.  Shifter forks must be removed in order to remove the main shaft and counter shafts.  The bearing race o the mainshaft between the belt pulley and the sixth gear must be removed.  The nut which holds the pul;ley in place is right handed unlike earlier five speed models which are left handed.  You must be extremely careful when sliding out nthe trap door with the shafts to avoid damaging the main gear/ sixth gear bearing.

2.  The main shaft and counter shft assemblies with the trap door should be removed as a unit.  Once removed from transmission they can be pressed out of the bearings, old bearings will have to be pressed out and new pressed in.  The inner races of trapm door bearings must be supported when pressing the main and counter shafts into the trap door.

3.  My advice would tear down of the trans., replace all bearings and seals.  If you do not have the right tools you are beating a dead horse. JMHO.  Trans. can be rebuilt w/o removing it from frame.

Right on bro's, I will take off the spacer on the outside of the pulley, remove the 2 1/4 inch sprocket nut, the sprocket. Then I need to know how to remove shifter forks. He's needs to find his manual. This is crazy with no manual. I'll be back....Tom
