New noise after dyno tune. Opinions?
Jake72:
I did some things over the winter to my 2009 RK that already had the SE stage 2 103 kit (SE 255 cams to 54h, heads clean up, valve job, stock valves re-used, heads milled 15 thou, 30 thou headgasket, 850-1 lifters, re-used stock pushrods as Andrews told me the base circle was 20 thou less thenstock so only 10 thou more preload on lifters. Rode it ~75 miles or so then had it tuned at local dealer with TTS back in Feb (won't be going back to them BTW even though they were trained by Doc). On the ride home from picking it up I noticed a new noise immediately when going above ~3500 rpms. Sounded like it was coming out of the top of the gas tank (had windshield on) but you can't hear it if you lean fwd or down to the side. It's a metal to metal tapping sound and after awhile I could hear it on decel when letting off the throttle and if holding at a constant higher RPM it would go away if slightly changing throttle positions. Finally took it by a local Indy and he said it didn't sound typical of a TC but he had another customer that his bike sounded the same and had no current issues or complaints by the owner. I decided to try some SE adjustables so I could try different pre-loads and after initial the higher rpm sound seemed better but lower rpm noise was still there and most notable when letting off the throttle. Have tried 2 1/2 turns, 3 turns and even put the stock B's back in with no change. Opened up the front top rocker box and all seems ok except it looks like the exhaust pushrod may be contacting the top of the tube (non-tapered pushrods) but had the noise before with the stock pushrods. Was gonna check the rear rocker box tonight but wanted to get some opinions on what else to look at or if this is just something from the build thats typically "normal". Just thought it was odd that I didnt notice it until after the tune. BTW, the bike runs fine except for the overall tune the dealer did. Thanks in advance and sorry so long, Jake.

Did your tuner build the motor? If not, he's not the blame for the noise. Sounds like something may be loose.. take it back to the builder and see what he thinks..

Didn't mean to sound like it was the tuners fault. I never felt that way at all, just thought it might be useful in some way. I put the bike together, first TC but messed around with my previous sportster and the '72 shovel that was my dads I have, and that is why I was asking for any ideas. Front rocker arm play was in the manuals specs and could not see anything else obviously wrong and all bolts were tight but I'm no expert for sure. I'm gonna look at the rear rockers next just to be sure. Bike seems to run fine except for the new noise but like I said maybe just something new, but not neccesarily bad, from the changes. If the rear rockers seem ok, I think I will just keep the 850-1's in and ride unless someone has an idea of what to check. Thanks again, Jake.

More than likely just the pushrods making contact...you didn't do yourself any favours by using the screamin chicken stuff & I'm pretty sure that your stockers are the same dia.. Get a set of Smithbros & you will never look back after comparing to screamin chicken! :chop:
