Checking trans fluid

When checking my trans fluid on 2000flh I usually start to thread it in about one turn. Why do they say to just let the dipstick rest on top of threads.

Nebraskarider1:
I suppose its just a standard so we do it the same. Easier than screwing it in all the way then back out I guess like the newer engine oil dipsticks.

HarleyHiwayMan:
If it's not leaking, is there a reason to check it?

hombre912:
It's just another one of the unexplainable things that harley does.  Common sense dictates that the procedure for checking trans fluid should be as close as possible to that of checking engine oil, NOT the opposite as is the case.
Personally, I check my engine oil the same way I check the trans fluid, by NOT screwing in either.  This method results in an oil dip-stick reading about a quarter-inch lower than the screw-in method.
