04 SE DEUCE:
My dad bought a barely operating dealership in 1969..AMF came in about the same time...as to when the bikes had AMF stuck on them anywhere I'm not exactly sure, but if I remember correct there was small AMF stickers/graphics on them before 1972, and they started doing the AMF/Harley-Davidson graphics. Always had fun making up what AMF stood for. Mom always told people that it was American Motorcycling's Finest...yeah right mine were mostly X-rated. Rick

For the record, there are a lot of good running bikes still out there on the road made with the AMF badge on them. I've got 3 in my garage and all of them run. I bought a new '77 FXE and put over 100k miles on it with no problems. AMF pumped a lot of money into Harley Davidson to keep them afloat. Chances are, if it weren't for AMF, Harley might not be in business and we wouldn't be having this conversation. Ok, I'll go to the Shed now and help Bruno clean up for tonights meeting.

I know my 71 XLCH was, what a pile.Worked on it for a couple of years trying to keep that thing on the road, best part was watching it GO down the road with someone else. That was in 75,and that was my last sportster........well, till I got a brothers 78 after his death a few years ago.

AMF also did so much for H-D that we still love today but most don't know AMF was behind the development.
AMF purchased H-D when the quality was already bad. Just be glad a Japanese. company didn't buy them.
I personally think that AMF era bikes were right on par for quality when compared to anything of the same era.

I bought a '72 XLCH new. It had AMF stickers. It ran great until about 4700 miles when a rod disintegrated. WTF! Warranty ended at 4k. :(
I was a young Marine back a couple of years from Vietnam. Had no money to fix it. I wrote a long letter to the MoCo about how I took care of that bike and how much it meant to me.
About 2 months later the dealer in Oceanside called me. They had just received a new crate engine for me. NO CHARGE!!!!
The dealer threw in a Sifton cam and a Mikuni. Bike ran great till the day I sold it.
