Freedom air wings Plus
« on: Sunday, May 13, 2012. 11:21:14 AM. »
Anyone have any experience with these,

http://www.freedom-wings.com/Plus_Facts.html

I get lots of air and rain in the chest area and wonder if these would help with the updraft?
Have the lowers on and the adjustable Freedom wings and still get the wind and rain in the chest and face.

I'll give you my experience with them. I wasn't able to run them long enough to tell any difference.

I put a set of the Freedom Wings and the Wings Plus on 2 years ago. During a storm in Mississippi, a wind gust broke one of the mounting arms on one of the Wings right at the screw hole where it mounts to the fairing. I took them off for the rest of the season.

I contacted Freedom Wings and sent them a picture of the broken mounting arm. They sent me a replacement arm.

Last year I put the Freedom Wings and Wings Plus back on. Again, during some bad weather, one of the arms on the Freedom Wings broke again. I took them off and I'm done fooling with them.

If you want to try the Wings Plus that goes under the Wings, PM me your address. You can have them.

I can't comment on the "Wings Plus" as I've never had a set.

If your asking about the Freedom Wings as well, I have had better luck than smitty.  I've had mine on for about 5 years now and never had one break yet.  My dealer sales guy gave me my set as a freebie, so maybe if you pay less they work better.  If you decide to pass on the set of plus wings smitty was nice enough to offer, I'll be in line right behind you to snatch 'em up.

I've had the Freedom wings on my bike for 3 yrs. with no problem. I had not heard about the plus.  The wings really do direct a lot of air to you when open. As for keeping rain off I think that is a problem of aerodynamics or something I'm not able to explain well.  The batwing pushes a lot of air, and causes negative pressure in the tank area. Mist from the tires and edges of the fairing are sucked into it. I have every rain/air deflector option I know of on my E.G. and still get mist all over my glasses. I'm off to order the "plus" now,  to see if it helps my attempts to see in the rain.   :smilep:

I've had a pair of both and they do work. I use the "Plus" during colder weather which does limit (not "eliminate" air across the knees from the front. I also put my lowers on as well and an air dam. on the triple tree. What I like about them is I can remove them easily and put them in the tour pack while on the road.

Sent you a PM Smitty.

Appreciate the offer.
Will see myself if they will help.

I don't mind the wind, just all the rain going up in my face from below.

Do you have the lower triple clamp "baffle" installed?  I think I'd go that route first.

Yea Glen, got it too.

The air that I am talking about comes up over the lowers and up beside the tank hitting me
in the upper chest and neck area. The air part is ok except when I get caught in the rain.
Have tried the stock permanent mount non adjustable air deflectors also. Same thing.
Stock height windshield.

You need a lap shield.  I haven't had use oned since the '70s but it's just what you need. You probably won't like the idea, but it works just fine.

Take a piece of canvas or Cordura about a foot wide by  12- 14" long and have the edges hemmed.  Your personal dimension (primarily belly) is the controlling factor.

Put a grommet in each corner or have small loops of nylon parachute cord sewn there.

Get the smallest, shortest bungee cords you can (2) and use them to attach 2 corners of the material to the handlebars.  Pick a spot you like that will spread the fabric wide; mirror stalks are handy.

Take another bungee of appropriate size, stretch it across your back, and attach it to the two aft corners of the fabric.

And you're done - no more road slop in your face from the updraft.

Or buy a Road Glide with lowers (or an old FXRT) like I did and you won't need it.

Your bike is $2,000 away from being dead, solid perfect.  And it always will be.

I have the Freedom Wings Plus, I use them on my 09 Ultra with a set of non adjustable factory deflectors, I had to drill the hole down a half inch and make a 1/4" spacer for the screw to go between the deflector and the plus wing to get them to fit with the factory deflectors. Otherwise it would have been tilted. I use the non adjustable factory deflectors in the cooler months since they are a little bigger than the adjustable factory ones, the Freedom Wings Plus might help a little but I don't know if I would buy them again. In all fairness to the manufacturer, keep in mind I have them mounted a half inch higher than they are supposed to be. IMO I think the older non adjustable deflectors would help more than the Plus wings do for what you are looking for, they are wider than the factory adjustable deflectors and usually clear ones are about 10 bucks at swap meets so it wouldn't cost much to try them.

Years ago, I remember a website where they sold leather vests that had "flaps" sewn in the front. They would lie flat when you weren't moving, but when you got up to speed they would flap up, so to speak, and solve all your wind related problems. Funniest chit I'd seen!! But some guys swore by them. I Assume they are still available, but I didn't bother trying a search. Not my cup of tea.

Edit: Ok, I got curious and did the search. They are called Jacks Flaps by Aerovest.
