Had to take a break from the build to make a holding fixture, space around here is at a premium and I didnt want to drill 4 holes in the workbench. This slides on my automotive transmission holding fixture and also turns 360° horizontally, I used a old engine Timken at the bottom of the center tube. Also drilled some holes so that I can mount a 4 speed tranny on the plate.

Bill, your right and I'm glad that it's only a "hobby" now a days, I'd hate to try and make a living at this anymore  :embarrassed: , back when, if I would have had to make a tool in the middle of a job I would have been pissed, now it doesnt bother me , kinda like keeping my skills up a little...  :teeth:

Since you're still in the sorting out phase for cams it would not hurt to give this fellow a call.

http://www.leinewebercams.com/

I may catch hell for this one but if can intervene here for one second on the leinweber cam. There is much better more modern grinds that are easier on valve trains. I was bullied into using a E7S in my 93" and let me tell ya after 500 miles and I can show you how badly worn everything in my top end was from the cinder block like lobes on that bump stick. it gets involved in a long story i don't wish to get involved in at this time but lets just say I would not go with the leinweber.
Sorry Jim.

No worries, we went with Andrews B cam, I feel comfortable with this as I've done a ton of shovels with this cam and had great results.

BTW, the reason I havent posted here is that we're still waiting on lifters and PRs , that will finish the engine and then we'll get going on the tranny.

In the meantime, we're getting the frame ready, fixing threads , welding broken brackets etc. ,the front end and wheels for rebuilding.

I'll try and get some more pictures posted up later this week....

Sorry to hear this and although those steep ramps can make for a noisy top end I have never seen anyone complain about poor service or bad product from Leinweber. (Not that it can't happen I just never heard it before).  I have the L3S in and I have to be pushing over 5000 miles by now on it.  It leaves a little too much cylinder pressure in my 93"er so it cranks hard hot but so far no other issues. I like it for running two up and loaded. In this mill I had an Andrews B for a while, swapped that for S&S 560 then this Leinweber.
They can't put anything on the internet that isn't true.

i've never seen anyone complain about mr Jim Leineweber either........i've mostly used his cams for 20 years........i plain ol' love the way they sound and work...........but at this stage in my life i've gone a little to the "softer ramp" philosophy. i'll give a big thumbs up for all these......L3S, L31, L51, E31, E5S and E51.........i just ran a Crane 308B (same as Andrews B with + .005 lift) with 1.5 roller rockers at 10.5:1. pretty darned nice cam too in an 80".

Well I guess I deserve this, I've highjacked some threads in my time too, but really guys, I'd like to keep this a little real.

Here's where I'm at for now with the engine ,, I'd like to continue on with the rest of the build as it comes along....

 That motor is looking good!  Really like your holding fixture too.  I have a space problem also, so I'll be making one like it.  Been using a modified car motor stand and it's always in the way and tries to roll off on me when I'm wrenching.

3-29-12 , things are moving along again, this poor bike was a complete mess...... and the resurection continues;

Engine is complete

sandblasting the frame, almost every thread had to be redone, and a couple of brackets needed welding

In primer

Painted with Acrylic enamel, it needs to be sanded and reshot again, I dont know what Karl did but it's got orange peel pretty bad and he's not a proffesional painter.

I got the tranny apart and true to the rest bike , not much useable here, it will need a complete gear set plus some.

Nice milkshake, got a tablespoon of water out when I drained it

One piece at a time.....

It is looking good though. Always enjoy watching these bikes get rebuilt from a bare frame.

Thanks Turboprop, I think I'm gonna take some days off and relaxe , get my head on straight and start over with a fresh outlook. Next week I got a buddy coming in to do a primary reseal on a 99 FXR 2, and that should be a nice change of pace, at least I wont have to customize anything.......... I hope.

Anyway after this one is done I'm retiring and wont be doing much except my own stuff. The mind is willing but the body is shot , at least I dont need a trike ,,,, yet  :teeth:

 :nix:  What can I say? Its what I have. I have ordered a set of 3 Degree rake frame cups. So I can use the triple trees that this bike came with. And what do I do with the miss matched pair that don't work? Napkins holder on Kitchen table , maybe?. But when War Horse gets back onto this it come along nicely until I decide what to do for transmission. Looking into aftermarket stuff and have something already on order (complete drivetrain) but like most stuff for Shovels things are back ordered. Man I traded stuff usable right at this point... :missed: :banghead:

VERY cool the way you've got the transmission case mounted to that plate so you can work on it.  Is that the same stand you were using with the engine?  I should have thought about it and drilled a couple holes in the top of my table lift to bolt the transmission down solid when I was rebuilding mine last fall.

Looking good WarHorse!   :teeth:
