Sissybar roll bags and need for luggage rack

(1/2) > >>

RKC03:
Had to remove luggage rack on softtail as the new tail-light that I bought to replace the POS OEM one fills the entire inside of the rear fender (no space for the tangs of luggage rack). I plan on  buying a roll bag with the plastic pipe inside for use as backrest. Even though it usually will rest on passenger part of seat, I was wondering if it is a stict no-no to place the bag on the fender w/o a luggage rack (even if careful with the amount of weight involved), I was thinking that I could place a towel on fender to protect the paint if I did this. It would probably be a rare thing as I pefer to ride solo on the softail...the RK is for my two-up riding...any advice/thought would be appreciated :smiled:RKC

Ely:

Google a product called tank slapper.  Its a clear plastic film that lays on a clean surface ie.  tank, fender, and is held in place by static elc.
Some of it is pre cut for the sport bikes but you can order it in sheets cut to size lay it on and it will protect your paint and when you wash your bike or are done with it it pulls right off  (kinda like the oil change thingies that the quick lube joint puts on your windshield) and best of all you can reuse the stuff.

  Thanks, I'll do that...so I guess not using a luggage rack is ok as long as you don't overdo it on the weight huh?

I think you would be surprised how much wt. you can load on a steel fender. Seen some guys with 300 series wide tire customs in Reno hauling some pretty hefty gals on the fender.   IMHO a role bag full of clothes is no problem.

BAKON:
Weight - no problem. Paint- no problem either as long as you dont like it.
